iPad News: Microsoft takes a swing at the Apple iPad

Steve Ballmer was obviously fed up with this recent Apple success, and frustrated that his Lord and Master Bill Gates is no longer King of the World. How long that change of majestic government will last, however, is open to speculation. As Ballmer pointed out, Apple products still only account for 6% of the world’s computing market, whilst Microsoft has a staggering 91% share. The big question is this: is this down to consistent real innovation by Microsoft, is it simply because Microsoft were ‘first past the post’ in the initial computing race (therefore cornering all the software and licensing), or are Microsoft products simply more functional and robust than Apple products? There is no doubt in Ballmer’s mind as to the answer: “any device that consumers use to send e-mails, surf the Web, and create documents is, at the end of the day, a PC”. The iPad, in his opinion, is just a glamorous, shiny fashion-accessory, which does the same things as a notebook, only not as well. It’s like the iPad is a kid’s toy and the PC is for grownups. In another swipe at the iPad, Ballmer quipped, “A guy tried to take notes on one in a meeting with me yesterday—that was fun. The meeting didn't go very fast.” So is the iPad a less-useful, more-beautiful version of a good old PC? After all, you can do all those things on it that you’d associate with your notebook: emailing, web surfing and so on. You could always shout ‘touch screen interactivity’ as the iPad novelty, but that isn’t strictly true either: Windows 7 supports touch screen interactivity, just not in its basic version. I think Steve ‘I’m fed up with Apple’ Ballmer is missing the point by miles. Apple will never overtake Microsoft in the globalized computing monopoly game and I don’t think it’s trying to. Apple is forging ahead creating new markets with new style devices. And whatever Ballmer thinks of these in terms of workhorses, Apple is deliberately breeding show horses, which not only function well but also look great. What’s wrong with owning a gadget that does a whole bunch of neat stuff and looks terrific? Nothing! Maybe Steve Ballmer and Microsoft could do with an Apple style make over…
