iPad News: Microsoft CEO Ballmer Still Doesn't Get It

It’s easy to under stand why Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer doesn’t really want to answer any questions about the iPad, or Apple products in general, but he’s pretty much stuck with them as long as he’s the head of a rival company that regularly gets its ass kicked by Steve Jobs & Co. When a CNET reporter tried to pry some info out of him, Ballmer was about at forthcoming as a Wall St. banker being interrogated by a White House finance committee. When asked whether MS could come up with a tablet to compete with the iPad in terms of long battery life and instant-on ability, Ballmer replied: “I think probably the things of tomorrow are best left for tomorrow and the things of today are best discussed today. So today, I will focus on Windows Phone.” I think that means he has no idea when they’ll have a competing tablet. It gets better. When asked to comment on the number if iPads he sees in public, Ballmer gave this: “You certainly see more. You certainly see more than I would like. One is more than I would like. On the other hand, it depends what people are doing. Certainly someone who wants to sit and do an interview and take notes and scroll around, they are unlikely to find that device very comfortable. It doesn’t stand up on its own. It doesn’t have a big screen and keyboard. I’m not taking anything away from what Apple has done and certainly we have our work cut out for us.” Note that it doesn’t seem to occur to him that maybe some people prefer the smaller, more compact device and the touchscreen. Maybe they don’t want to drag a five-pound laptop around just so they can have “a big screen and keyboard.” How can a CEO expect his products to compete with a rival’s when he fails to see why the other product is so well-like by the public? No wonder his bonus was cut in half this year.
