Although Apple's Wi-Fi version of the iPad was released before, it had some limitations, particularly for those customers who wanted a device that would provide connectivity while on the go. With the Wi-Fi version, users are limited to the wireless networks within their range for when they want to use the internet-related functions of the device. The 3G version, however, offers users much more flexibility. Since this newer version combines Wi-Fi plus 3G, users can be on the move and not have to worry about how to connect to the internet, as the 3G version offers connectivity through AT&T's 3G network. This advantage has likely caused many potential buyers to wait for the 3G release, but those who were not lucky enough to snag one up last weekend will have to wait longer now.
Luckily, there is a bit of structure in the waiting game for the iPad 3G. Apple stores are offering customers the Notify Me service, which will basically alert them of when the 3G version is back in stock. Once stores receive more units, the customer on the official waiting list will get an email notifying them that the device is in stock. After that, the customer has 24 hours to go to the store in person to purchase it. If you want to get on the Notify Me list, you will likely have to go sign up for it in person at your local Apple store. Some locations will allow you to sign up for it over the phone, though. Why should you sign up for the Notify Me service? First, those on the Notify Me list will receive top priority when the iPad becomes available again. Customers who walk into the store randomly might be able to tell that the iPad is in stock, but until the customers on the Notify Me list are given a chance to claim theirs, the walk-in customers will be out of luck. Second, by having an email notification sent to you, you save time by having to call in and ask for status and it saves unnecessary trips to the store. While it is unfortunate that the iPad 3G is sold out in many locations, it is comforting to know that Apple has instituted an organized manner to allow customers to pick up the product when it becomes available. As they say, “patience is a virtue.”
