iPad News: Man Recovers Stolen iPads with App's Help

As reported by San Jose's Mercury News, a San Jose man had received a call last Monday from his home's security surveillance company that his house had been broken into. The 31-year old man went to his home, and what he found was a bit unnerving, to say the least. An estimated $20,000 worth of electronics were missing. Among the stolen goods were two new iPads. To add a little twist to the whole story, the victim was employed as a manager for Apple, meaning he probably had a little more knowledge about the product than your average Joe. With this, he figured out exactly what he could do to track down the thieves and recover his iPads and other possessions. Luckily, the employee had already downloaded the MobileMe Find My iPhone app. This app, among other features that it offers, has the ability to track one's iPhone or iPad should it get lost thanks to GPS technology. The app is a great thing to have for forgetful people who tend to lose track of things, as it will give you the exact location of your device, play a sound if it is nearby, and much more. Knowing this, the victim activated the app on his iPhone, and then called the police. When the police showed up at his ransacked home, he notified them of the app and what it could do. The app was able to track the two stolen iPads as they traveled around town in the thieves' possession. One could only imagine the adrenaline rushing through the victim's mind as he saw his two precious iPads and other devices moving along his iPhone's screen as two small icons. By tracking the criminals in real-time and documenting every turn they made, the police were able to station units to intercept them. The two thieves were arrested, and the victim had all of his stolen items, iPads included, returned to him. Having that one simple app installed helped recover $20,000 in personal property. That just goes to show you the advancements in technology that are occurring everyday. It also goes to show you how important it is to exercise proper iPad security. Considering the popularity and cost of the device, it makes a very attractive target for thieves. With that in mind, you should take some preemptive action to protect yourself in the event that you either lose your iPad or it gets stolen. Downloading the MobileMe Find My iPhone app is a great measure to take, as it can not only show you where your iPad is, but can lock it remotely or even perform a system restore to factory defaults to keep all of your personal data private.
