iPad News: Is Apple's iPad iBook monopoly set to collapse?

According to the spokesman for Google, Chris Palma, speaking at a panel discussion held at Random House in New York yesterday, Google’s new book service looks set for release as early as the end of June. Unlike the Apple app, Google’s book service, entitled ‘Google Editions’ will be accessible on all platforms that run a web browser, including iPads. This must be a potential thorn in the side for Apple as its iBooks can only be used with the iPad. In amongst the sheen of the iPads’ launches last month, a certain discontent has started to grow. Nobody likes monopoly builders; look at the backlash against Bill Gates during the pinnacle of the Microsoft era. With accusations that Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs is flying a little too high, perhaps it is up to Google to bring Apple’s dominance back down to earth. I do find this just slightly hypocritical. After all, don’t Google all but dominate the search engine market? There is no doubt that Google is big enough and brave enough to ensure that there is a decent crossover into Apple’s iBook domain once Google Editions is released. Will that trigger an Apple ban similar in scale to the famous Adobe Flash ban? Time will tell. It would be a brave company indeed who decided to go down that particular road… Although agreements have yet to be finalized with various publishers, the consensus is that this shouldn’t present any long term difficulties. Publishers are always eager to market their books in new or emerging places. Google will allow publishers to set their own prices and keep a large slice of the profit from each sale. Apple has invested heavily in its iBooks app, making sure its bookstore is packed full of diverse and interesting titles. Current download figures show that the iBooks app is extremely popular. Competition is never a bad thing. Surely the entrance of Google into the ebooks market place will ensure that Apple continues to develop new and exciting ways to add value to their already excellent apps.
