Everybody loves buying shiny new electronic gadgets, but what are you supposed to do with the old ones they replace? Rather than letting them clutter up the closet, a lot of people are trading them in on eBay. A new report from eBay reveals that the number of iPads traded in is more than double the number of iPods. The online bargain store has a special Earth Day promotion going until April 30, and is offering $150 for an iPad, $100 for an iPhone and $50 for an iPod. The gadgets do not have to be working. Also as part of the deal, eBay is including a $5 gift card and a matching $5 donation to Global Green USA. What’s the most frequently traded item among Apple devices? Right now, it’s the iPhone, which represents 71.3% of eBay’s trade-ins, followed by the iPad with 20.5% and the iPod with 8.5%. It figures that the iPhone would be the most traded-in, since most users get a new one at least every two years, when their contract runs out and they can get a subsidized deal on a new one. The iPhone is also being upgraded at a faster rate than the iPod. The most traded-in iPads are the 3G models, which represent 64.8% of the total. The iPhone 3G is the leader in iPhone models, with 41.3% of trade-ins. The iPhone 4 accounts for just 14.7% of eBay trade-ins, probably because the owners still have contracts and there’s no iPhone 5 yet to trade up to.

These trade-in prices are pretty low, but not so bad for a non-working device. If your 2010 model iPad is in immaculate shape, you can always list it on eBay and get way more than $150.
