iPad News: iPad Will Lead the Field Again in 2011

On Friday, the CEO of Acer boasted that his company would lead the tablet field in a couple of years. I hope he didn’t bet on any football games this weekend, because his prediction is likely to haunt him in the future. Barrons compared reports by analysts from Citigroup and FBR Capital Markets as well as Taiwan paper DigiTimes, and found all were in agreement on one thing: the iPad will lead the tablet market for quite a while to come. Citigroup expects 35 million tablets to ship next year, three quarters of them iPads, which would give Apple sales of 26 million. Craig Berger of FBR Capital Markets predicts Apple will sell 40 million iPads while their competitors move 30 million. DigiTimes gives the most optimistic prognostication, claiming Apple is ramping up production in anticipation of selling 70 million iPads, with other tablets selling 30 million. Obviously, this is all gazing into the future, but these estimates indicate the confidence that the iPad has inspired in just a few months. It will very difficult for the coming tide of “iPad killers” to make up for lost time. Their task may be more daunting after the iPad 2 is released early in 2011—especially if the next gen model incorporates the features considered lacking in the original, like cameras and FaceTime.
