When Apple launched the iPad in April 2010, rivals put down the idea of a tablet computer. Now those companies are scrambling to put out their own versions and some are bragging that theirs are “iPad killers.” But according to a report by PC World, analysts think Apple will dominate the tablet market for years to come. In the opinion of iSuppli, tablet shipments are set to increase by a factor of 12 by 2015, when total shipments of tablets will reach 242.3 million units. The firm feels Apple's head start and "ecosystem development" will keep the iPad on top of the market through 2011 and into 2012. Rhoda Alexander, director of monitor research at HIS, explains this explosion: “The remarkable expansion of the tablet market from 2010 to 2015 will be driven by three successive waves of growth. The first wave, which is hitting in 2010 and 2011, was created by the arrival of the iPad and the ensuing tsunami of demand for the device. The second wave, arriving in 2011 and 2012, will be propelled by a deluge of iPad competitors, particularly Android-based models. The third wave, which will turn up in 2013, will consist of a flood of models based on the Windows operating system that will expand the reach of tablets into traditional computer markets.”

The first really formidable iPad challenger looks to be Motorola’s Xoom, which is set to hit stores later this month. Will the Xoom or any of the other Android powered tablet be able to carve out a major chunk of Apple’s current 90% share of the market? Only time—and the quality of iPad’s competitors—will tell.
