There are many music apps available for the iPad, some of which have been reviewed here on iPad.net. One of the music apps utilised by iPad Orchestra is Seline HD developed by Amidio. Seline synthesizes a variety of orchestral instruments, reproducing them electronically but with a ‘Seline Edge’, giving the sound a unique individuality. Like most creative apps in the app store, the results are in many ways dependent on the competence of the user. I’m sure that the members of iPad Orchestra are established and successful musicians, but quite frankly their performance of Sweet Dream is teeth-numbingly awful. There are many excellent musical apps available for the iPad, including drums, guitars and keyboards. Several of these produce excellent quality and variation of sound. And then there’s Seline HD… As I had feared, the Seline HD app faithfully reproduces the agonising cacophony I’d come to associate with those cheap Casio keyboards from the 1990’s. The sound is tinny and marginally off-key. Vibrato features are more like warbling and the whole experience is enough to make me dive for the mute button. iPad Orchestra playing Sweet Dream is like anti-advertising for the iPad. It’s a shame, because there are many good quality applications that do the job significantly better than Seline HD. In the right hands, with the right apps, the iPad can make a positive contribution to the creative arts. Unfortunately, this YouTube video doesn’t display that.
