iPad News: iPad Goes Dr Doolittle

Actually, the name of the bottlenose dolphin being used in this work is Merlin. Research Scientist Jack Kassewitz of SpeakDolphin.com first introduced Merlin to the iPad at the end of May 2010. The idea is to use the iPad to build a usable and coherent language interface between Merlin and Jack. Merlin is a very young dolphin, born only two years ago, and is very inquisitive. Asked why the institute chose the iPad, Jack Kassewitz explained that they needed a device with a suitable touch screen capability which a dolphin could activate using its nose. “Waterproofing, processor speed, touch-sensitivity, anti-glare screens, and dolphin-friendly programs are essential,” said Kassewitz, “As this database of dolphin symbols grows – we’ll need fast technology to help us respond appropriately and quickly to the dolphins.” Teaching the dolphins language and communication skills will involve the recognition and choosing of various symbols on the iPad screen. This is a very similar system used by speech therapists in developing communication skills with children who have learning difficulties. Kassewitz explained. “We think that once the dolphins get the hang of the touch screen, we can let them choose from a wide assortment of symbols to represent objects, actions and even emotions”. The first task is to link real life objects, such as a ball, with its image on the iPad screen. Apparently Merlin sees this as a fun game but it is all part of the learning process. It is staggering that such a novel application can be found for the iPad. As people become more familiar with the iPad, possibilities for its use will expand still further. What started as a multimedia internet platform, branded as an entertainment device, looks set to facilitate real progress in the scientific world.
