iPad News: iPad Competitors Called `Junk`

The Consumer Electronics Show is coming in just a few days, bringing with it lots of exciting new products that consumers will be clamoring for in 2011. OK, that’s what the participants are hoping, especially the ones who will be debuting tablet computers set to compete with Apple’s iPad. The brand most desperately needing a device that will grab the fancy of the buying public is Microsoft, which will be debuting several Windows based tablets at CES. Whatever MS comes up with, it needs to be a whole lot better than anything Apple’s competition put on the market in 2010. Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair had some pretty harsh things to say in his Dec. 28 report for All Things Digital. “Even with a handful of tablet competitors hitting the market, the iPad remained the only game in town in our holiday checks largely because many of the tablets hitting the market are junk for lack of a better word. They are underpowered, poorly constructed and largely not ready for prime time.”

Ouch! This pretty much echoes what Apple CEO Steve Jobs said a few months ago, calling competing tabs “dead on arrival.” While the Samsung Galaxy Tab has done fairly well, the HP Slate lived down to Jobs’ expectations. While Android-powered smartphones are projected to have a major impact on the marketplace in 2011, it remains to be seen whether Android tablets can steal iPad’s thunder. Given Microsoft’s recent track record, it seems unlikely that they’ll be unveiling anything stupendously new and innovative at CES.
