iPad News: iPad 3G Now Available at AT&T Online Store

This happened a bit too late for AT&T to cash in on the holiday iPad mania, but better late than never. The carrier is now one of three places customers can order an iPad online and have it shipped. For months after the April release of the groundbreaking tablet, the only site selling the iPad online was the Apple store. Best Buy was added in time for the Christmas shopping season, and AT&T earlier this week. Despite missing the holiday business, this is good timing for AT&T, since it’s still the only carrier authorized to offer 3G service for the iPad. This is expected to change in 2011, when Verizon Wireless becomes the second carrier to partner with Apple for their mobile devices.

While it’s still unknown whether Verizon will be offer 3G or 4G service for the iPad, it’s almost certain that there will be a Verizon iPad coming in 2011. Apple recently placed an ad for “Verizon iPad engineers,” indicating the carrier will have its own incarnation of the iPad 2. Currently, Verizon is selling just the Wi-Fi models of the iPad bundled with MiFi packages. AT&T’s online prices mirror those of Apple, 16 GB model for $629, 32 GB for $729, and 64 GB for $829, all with free shipping.
