At 1.5 pounds and ½ inch thick, the iPad is a lightweight compared to most laptop computers, but it’s downright clunky next to Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, which weighs in at a mere 13 ounces and is less than ½ inch. Of course, the Galaxy has a smaller 7” screen while iPad’s is 9.7 inches. Apple will be keeping that screen size for the second gen iPad, but is expected to be slimming down the rest of the package. A report released Friday from analyst Brian Blair of Wedge Partners gives some insights into what’s to come for the iPad in 2011. “Recent checks…suggest Apple is going to be ratcheting down production of the existing 3G iPad over the next two months in anticipation of ramping up a new World iPad that is powered by Qualcomm and will run on both GSM and CDMA based networks around the world.” That means the iPad 2 will incorporate Qualcomm’s CDMA-GSM chip and can run on several cellular carriers including Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. Blair continued, “We…understand the new iPad is thinner than the existing model and is essentially made from one piece of metal with no pins needed. We understand it requires a new type of manufacturing process as a result, similar to the company’s unibody approach seen in MacBooks.” All this certainly sounds promising—a lighter, thinner iPad that gives users a choice of cellular carriers worldwide.
