On April 3, 2010, the iPad officially went on sale for the first time. When Apple CEO had introduced the tablet computer to the world on January 27, he stated: “iPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price. iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.” There were plenty of naysayers who expected the new device to flop, especially among rival makers of electronic devices. Those naysayers were forced to sit up and take notice when Apple sold 300,000 iPads by midnight on Saturday, April 3. The owners of those 300,000 iPads wasted no time in downloading over a million apps and more than 250,000 ebooks that same day. Steve Jobs commented: “It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world—it’s going to be a game changer. iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad.” Less than a month after the launch of the iPad, one million units had been sold. In less than 60 days, it was two million.

In late May, the iPad went international, becoming available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. By the end of 2010, Apple had sold 14.8 million iPads, an astounding number for a new device no one had even heard of a year earlier. Happy first birthday to the little tablet that turned out to be every bit as “magical and revolutionary” as Steve Jobs promised it would be!
