iPad News: Hackers Using iPad's Popularity to Their Advantage

At the center of the the latest virus controversy is iTunes. Hackers have created a new popup that urges users to click on it in order to get the latest version of iTunes for the iPad. Just who exactly is the major target of these hackers? Well, Windows users who do not use any up to date anti-virus programs are within the bull's eye. If you run an anti-virus program with your PC, you should be good to go, as many of the programs have taken this particular Trojan virus into account. If you are taking notes, the the offending Trojan goes by the name of Backdoor Bifrose AADY. What the Backdoor Bifrose AADY essentially does when enabled is attempt to log and steal user logins to personal instant messaging programs as well as email accounts. The value of being able to access these accounts to hackers is high. Once in, they can use the accounts as avenues to send spam or spread the virus even further to other computers, as well as for other purposes. This latest attempt by hackers to spread viruses is quite clever. After all, the iPad is one of the hottest new devices on the market, and its users need iTunes for various purposes. By tricking Windows users that there is a new downloadable update available, many unsuspecting consumers that don't run anti-virus programs could download the malicious update onto their PCs, thus giving the hackers access to what they are looking for. So, how can you protect your iPad from such threats? Again, this particular virus will not affect your iPad, so you are safe in that regard. Your Windows PC is another story, however, and you can protect yourself in a couple of ways. First, you will want to run a current version of a solid anti-virus program on your PC to help protect it. This will aid in the event that the virus does attempt to access your computer. Second, only download iTunes directly from Apple's website. Do not try to do so from any imposter websites, no matter how legitimate they may appear to be. Following these steps will help keep your PC safe from the Backdoor Bifrose AADY. Just remember that while your iPad is rock-solid against these attacks, your new status as an iPad consumer makes you somewhat of a target. Be sure keep your eyes open, as you surely don't want your other electronic devices to be compromised.
