iPad News: Federal Grand Jury Investigates Hackers

Andrew Auernheimer (pictured) of the hacker group known as Goatse confirmed to CNET that several members of the group were grilled by the feds this week. “No warrants or indictments yet. Two Goatse analysts, sloth and Rucas, went before a grand jury on the 11^th. This makes well over a month of grand jury proceedings.” Auernheimer was arrested in June after FBI agents allegedly found drugs while searching his Fayetteville, Ark., home in relation to the AT&T case. After failing to show up for his hearing on the drugs, Auernheimer was arrested again in July. He has another arraignment scheduled for August 23. The group is responsible for exposing a flaw in the AT&T site that allowed the e-mail addresses of about 114,000 iPad users and the serial numbers of the SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards in the devices to be made public. This could have potentially left the customers vulnerable to identity fraud. Auernheimer insisted to CNET that what the group did was not illegal. “AT&T published private information for the world to see, essentially sticking their private diary on a shelf of the public library. The true extent of how responsible our disclosure was will come out in the trial if there is one.” A spokesman for the FBI office conducting the investigation declined to comment.
