iPad News: Exercise Caution When Using Your iPad at Public Wi-Fi Hotspots

The majority of iPads in use now are Wi-Fi only models, which means users need a hotspot to connect. It also means a lot of people depending on public hotspots at least part of the time. Most of us feel pretty safe as we sit at our local coffee house, sipping a latte and browsing the Internet with our iPads or laptops, but are we? Not according to the OnGuardOnline.gov website, which has some warnings for users of public Wi-Fi hotspots. The site, which is operated by several federal agencies including the Federal Trade Commission, Justice Department, Homeland Security and the Commerce Department, has concerns that many hotspots are not secure. Their advice? First, “only log in to sites that are fully encrypted,” meaning sites with an https at the beginning of the address and a lock in the lower right corner of the browser. Second, avoid hotspots that do not require a password. Third, only use hotspots with WPA (preferably WPA-2) rather than WEP encryption.

Other tips include logging in and out of accounts rather than staying logged in and avoid using the same password on multiple websites. If you’re a frequent user of Wi-Fi hotspots, it’s a good idea to use a VPN (virtual private network) that will encrypt traffic between your device and the Internet. As the use of mobile devices increases, so does the danger of online criminal activity, so it pays to be careful.
