iPad News: Delayed Global Release

Global nerves are cracking as Apple again pushes back the iPad international release date. Scheduled to coincide with the US launch, the international roll out was put back after demand outstripped supply in the US: 300,000 units were sold in the US on the first day alone, with 500,000 units in the first week. Analyst Ian Fogg from Forrester Research told the BBC in London “The iPad is in a new category of devices - for that reason I think it would have been very hard for Apple to have accurately predicted sales before launch” Some might say that the early US launch was premature. Several problems have emerged with the device. Although they are niggling rather than catastrophic, Apple rightly prides itself on perfection. It should do for the price! Intermittent connectivity is easily the most annoying. Wi-Fi connection can be very weak producing slow downloads. Occasionally connection will be lost altogether for no apparent reason, in exactly the same area receiving strong signals for the iPhone. Why? Surely Apple should have sorted this before the iPad’s US launch? After all, connectivity and internet use is a major marketing factor for this super-desirable device. Apple have offered a solution on their website, but it’s only for the VERY computer literate! Apple’s delay in the iPad’s international release should give them time to correct early device glitches. However, it’s a two-edged sword - it also gives their competitors time to develop their own niche in the hungry touch-screen portables market. International pre-lease ordering is now set for May 10^th with full release at the end of the month. Let’s hope Apple get it right second time round.
