iPad News: Cashed Up? Now You Too Can Get Your iPad!

A short while ago, Diane Campbell, a disabled woman living on a fixed income went to an Apple store in Palo Alto, California, to try to buy an iPad. She had saved up $600 cash with hopes to get her hands on the iPad, when she learned that she would not be able to. As with the iPhone, Apple had restriction in place that did not allow cash purchases of the iPad. This was instituted so that the manufacturer could track sales of the device via credit and debit cards. Since the item is so popular and its demand currently outweighs its supply, Apple created a two iPad limit per person. With cash purchases, it would be harder to track the limit, and many hungry online sellers could stack up on the iPad and sell it at a huge profit. This is an even larger possibility now, when you consider that the iPad's international release is delayed and on a limited basis. Those overseas waiting to get their hands on the iPad might be desperate enough to buy it from online sellers in the US at huge premiums, which Apple is trying to avoid. Campbell's run-in at the Apple Store actually made the local news, and they in turn contacted Apple with the story. As a way to save face and keep negative publicity down, Apple decided to do away with the no-cash policy. Now, customers can walk into Apple stores and get the product, if available, with their hard earned cash. This is great news for those who do not have bank accounts and debit cards, as well as those with bad credit who cannot qualify for credit cards. As a way to track the two iPad limit, Apple will require that the in-store cash purchasers set up their Apple accounts directly within the store. Although it may seem that a company refusing to take cash as payment is not legal, it is, according to the US Treasury Department. Luckily for many, it is no longer an issue with the iPad, though. Diane Campbell's small complaint which was successful in changing an entire company's policy not only helped others, but it also helped herself. In the end, Apple decided to send her a free iPad for her troubles. That's not a bad gift for making a phone call to your local news station.
