iPad News: Can iPads Replace Printed Menus?

Those greasy, stained restaurant menus with items crossed out and prices updated with a sharpie may soon be a thing of the past. The III Forks steakhouses in Jacksonville and Houston are trying out a high-tech ordering system, starting out with interactive wine lists using the iPad. Although the cost seems high, at $500+ per iPad, the system could save money in the long run. Michael Ryan, General Manager of La Cantina Laredo, which is owned by the parent company of III Forks, thinks so. “It saves on cost I would think eventually because you don’t have to keep reprinting menus. You just type in a different item. Then you can change it on a regular basis.” This is obviously a boon for eateries that have daily specials or change menu items frequently. The iPad menu has a built in bonus for patrons of dimly-lit restaurants and bars—you can read it in the dark.
