iPad News: Cablevision Releases iPad App

In spite of the licensing issues Time Warner Cable has been having keeping content on its iPad app, Cablevision today launched one of its own, offering about 300 channels of live TV, plus 2,000 video on-demand selections. Cablevision is hoping to skirt the legal problems that have plagued the TWC app by pointing out that its content is delivered over its Advanced Digital Cable network rather than over the Internet. Users can register up to three iPads to a single account and use two iPads at the same time. After installing the app, users will be asked for their Optimum ID and password. Like with the TWC app, content may only be watched in the home via a Wi-Fi connection. While Cablevision is using the argument that subscribers do not need Internet access to use the app, the fact that the iPad must be connected to a Wi-Fi network could raise the same licensing issues that have forced TWC to drop 11 channels since releasing its own app a few days ago. Cablevison reps will not comment on whether it has cut any sort of deal with content providers—or even consulted with them at all.

The Cablevision app for the iPad goes farther that the Time Warner Cable version by including searchable guide information, plus the ability to schedule DVR recordings and manage recorded content. Will the Cablevision app pass muster with the networks, since they seem to live back in the days when every home had one big black-and-white TV set in the living room and the whole family sat around it watching “The Ed Sullivan Show?” We’ll find out Monday morning, when their lawyers get to their offices.
