iPad News: Branson's `Project` Free for the Holidays

Richard Branson announced his “Project” magazine with great fanfare just a few weeks ago. The Virgin entrepreneur managed to beat rival billionaire Rupert Murdoch to the punch by creating the first periodical designed expressly for the iPad. The app is free, with each issue going for $2.99. The debut issue looked pretty promising, with Oscar winner Jeff Bridges on the cover and a feature about his role in the hit film “Tron: Legacy.” But I’m wondering how well it’s been selling since Branson announced on Thursday that Virgin would be offering the issue free “over the Christmas period.”

While Project is hyped as “a revolutionary multimedia magazine built specially for your iPad, packed with international culture, entertainment, design, business and travel,” the interactive bells and whistles tend to overwhelm the content. Is Branson looking to hook in more readers ahead of next month’s launch of Murdoch’s The Daily? Apple is also expected to debut a periodical subscription service through the iTunes store at the same time, along with an upgraded iOS.
