iPad News: Are School Kids Better Off With iPad?

There are some fantastic educational apps for children and young people of all ages available from the app store. The iPad is also by its very nature totally mobile and fits well into any decent backpack. I’m sure it is very good for those ‘last minute dudes’ who finish their assignments during recess before the final deadline (that brings back memories; I wish I’d had an iPad!) iPad is an excellent research tool with some excellent specialised apps as diverse as language learners through to scientific databases, all running alongside a choice of internet browsers. Swapping notes couldn’t be easier with its WiFi and 3G capabilities. As a home-based work tool, iPad continues to offer the facility to complete every major assignment on a single device. It may crucially free up the family desktop / laptop so the adults in the family can continue to work. We’re fortunate in our house to be ‘gadget rich’, so when I’m working on the desktop, my high school son is on the lap top whilst my junior high son uses the iPad. This means the boys can settle down to their homework without squabbles and general stress! There is always the problem of over-reliance on technology when it comes to education. Computer devices, not least the iPad, need to be seen as selective tools towards a more thorough understanding and learning experience. They should also not take the place of actually sitting down with your children and working through difficulties with them. There is another rather obvious consideration if you’re thinking of sending your child off to school with an iPad in his or her backpack. iPads aren’t cheap, and it may not be something you wish to put into harm’s way. Things get damaged and broken during the hubbub of a school day. More unhappily, things can go missing or get stolen…
