iPad News: Apple Updates iBooks

Apple just upgraded its iBooks reader with several spiffy new features. Version 1.2 lets users download digital books directly to iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, and also includes the ability to print notes or PDFs with AirPrint. Provided you’ve installed iOS 4.2.1, iBooks 1.2 will fit more words on a page by automatically hyphenating the text. Also included is the ability to organize books and PDFs into customized collections. Along with the iBooks upgrade, Apple announced the addition of more than 100 color e-books to the iBookstore, most of them children’s titles, photography books and cookbooks. This marks a big push by both Apple and the publishers into color e-books. Obviously, the large, bright iPad screen is ideal for experiencing lavishing illustrated books, much more so than the smaller e-readers like Amazon’s Kindle and the Nook from Barnes & Noble. This move by Apple makes the iPad much more attractive to readers who enjoy books for their art as much as their text. What would cookbooks be without the photos? While the Nook has recently come out with a color version, Amazon has not announced anything comparable for the Kindle. Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos stated back in May that color Kindles are “still a long way out,” but he might change his mind if the competing devices with color start eating into his market share.
