Is Apple going to take a bite out of the newspaper business? According to a report in today’s San Jose Mercury News, Apple will be launching an ambitious plan to sell newspaper subscriptions through the iTunes App Store, taking a 30 percent cut of subs and up to 40 percent of ad revenue. Some publishers are balking at the idea is using Apple as an intermediary, but given the sad state of newspaper publishing, what do they have to lose? Some papers already have dedicated iPad apps, but most don’t fully utilize the multimedia capacity of the device. This could be a big hit with frequent travelers, who are rarely home to read their print copies of the papers anyway, and want their news delivered to them immediately. Maybe Apple will actually make newspapers relevant again.
