iPad News: Apple Releases iOS 4.3 Beta to Developers

Apple released the beta version of iOS 4.3 to developers today, and it brings several desired features not included in previous upgrades. One of the major changes is that AirPlay support will allow third-party apps to broadcast content to the Apple TV 2. That’s big news for viewers who want to watch streaming video apps like Netflix and Hulu Plus on their TVs. For the iPad, iOS 4.3 introduces multi-touch gestures like the ability to exit an app and return to the home screen by pinching with four or five fingers. Others let users swipe left or right to switch between open apps and swipe up to open the multitasking bar. A controversial change made in iOS 4.2 involved the functionality of the switch on the side of the iPad, changing it from a screen rotation lock to a mute switch similar to that on the iPhone. This was unpopular with many users, and Apple is placating them by adding an option in the iPad Settings application that will allow users to customize the behavior of the switch.

Also included is Personal Hotspot capability, but availability of this feature may depend on the carriers. What does not seem to be included is the ability to subscribe to periodicals through the iTunes store, a feature that was expected prior to the debut of the iPad-only publication The Daily on January 19.
