iPad News: Apple Adobe War Hits Internet Bill Boards

Of course this all centres around Apple’s ongoing refusal to allow Adobe’s Flash technology to be used on its mobile devices, including the iPad. Adobe’s open letter takes a philosophical angle in its attack. Adobe’s founders and CEO’s, Chuck Geschke and John Warnock, suggested that open markets were in the best interests of software developers, and any restriction by hardware producers limits creativity and innovation. In their open letter, the two men stated, “Freedom of choice on the web has unleashed an explosion of content, and transformed how we work, learn, communicate, and, ultimately, express ourselves … If the web fragments in to closed systems, if companies put content and applications behind walls, some indeed may thrive, but their success will come at the expense of the very creativity and innovation that has made the internet a revolutionary force”. This is a real warning about Apple’s ‘closed shop’ mentality and ultimately questions who the web is for, who owns it and who runs it. Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, has yet to respond to this latest attack. His recent criticism of Adobe has centered on Flash’s unreliability, referring to the software as ‘buggy’. He has further restricted Adobe usage on Apple devices by including ‘non-emulation’ for third party software clauses in his application development contracts, effectively stopping any Flash use whatsoever. Adobe are very clear about Apple’s restrictive practice and accuse them outright of strangling the internet: “In the end” they stated, “we believe the question is really this: Who controls the World Wide Web? And we believe the answer is: nobody — and everybody, but certainly not a single company”. It looks as though there will not be a cease-fire declared between these two giants any time soon. One question haunts me. Has Adobe also released its web campaign in HTML5? If not, how is it’s the most targetable audience going to see their latest assault?
