iPad News: AOC Debuts $200 Breeze Tablet

For most would-be customers, the biggest obstacle to buying a tablet computer has been the high price. The most popular current models, Apple’s iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, start around $500 and go up from there. We should see lower prices on both later this year, as newer models are released and the market gets more competitive. We’ll be getting our first look at a lot of new tablets with various features and price points later this week at CES, but one manufacturer is already providing details on a tab with a price that will be hard to beat. But will it be worth the money? AOC, a manufacturer of low-end LCD monitors and HDTVs out of Taiwan, will be debuting the Breeze, an Android tablet selling for a rock-bottom $200. What do you get for that sum? For starters, an already-obsolete operating system, last year’s Éclair Android 2.1, which has been superseded by Google’s Honeycomb tablet-optimized Android OS. Also less-than-promising are the 802.11b/g Wi-Fi support and the paltry 4G of internal memory. On the bright side, it weighs just 1.1 pounds and includes a micro SD card reader and USB support. The 8” Breeze will be powered, if that’s really the proper word in this case, by a 600Mhz Arm9 processor Rockchip. Whoopee—that sounds about as powerful as a Yugo. But you get what you pay for, right?

AOC Marketing Manager of AOC, Robert Velez stated in the press release for the Breeze: “In developing the Breeze Tablet, we were able to capitalize on our expertise in video displays and our strength in the computer industry to create a device that matches our 60-year reputation of providing quality and user-friendly products at a great value.” Seeing the specs for this bargain-basement tab makes me doubt the “user friendly” and “great value” parts of this statement, but for people who really want to try out a tablet and are willing to put up with the shortcomings of this product, the Breeze may be worth a look.
