iPad News: Amazon, Google Challenge Apple

Reports have leaked that Amazon is in talks with Time Warner, CBS and Viacom about launching a movie and TV streaming service to compete with Hulu and Netflix. It’s believed that Amazon plans a web-based subscription service. Since Time Warner and CBS have expressed opposition to making their product part of Apple’s new $.99 TV rental service, their participation would big plus for Amazon. Google is rumored to be planning a worldwide pay-per-view streaming movie service through YouTube, and is currently talking to several major movie studios about product. The service is expected to charge about $5 for new films at the same time they become available on DVD, BluRay and iTunes. At first glance, it seems like this would cut into the studios’ sales of DVD and BluRay discs, so there would have to be some serious profit involved for them. Or maybe promotional tie-ins for their upcoming box office releases?
