Carmack: iPad 2's power is only half that of consoles

While id Software's John Carmack is a fan of Apple's technology, he will not go so far as to concur with the claims that iPad 2's power is equal to that of consoles.

ipad-2-jobs He says of Apple's mobile device, "We have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to mobile development." If it were up to him, though, he would much rather have developers bring in their games to consoles and rake in big bucks than pouring it all to iOS games. "We have more power than you can afford to take advantage of.

Regarding the "incorrect hyperbole" of iPad 2's power, "There's been incorrect hyperbole about the power of these devices, where people are saying that they have console-level performance. The iPad 2 has about half the performance power, and that's a ballpark estimate."

He still closes, though, with a positive word for mobile devices. "But that does mean that mobile devices coming out, certainly next year, will be flat out more powerful, and they'll probably be powerful enough where you don't even need the hyper-optimizing, that you could do a fairly easy port-over of your technology and assets."

Earlier last month, Electronic Arts dissed on the App Store, saying that its model is in "freefall".

That's logistically impossible. If they could cram that much comparable processing power into something that small and allay the need for cooling systems like with consoles, then that technology would simply be applied in consoles in a larger scale. Given that recent revisions of the PS3 and the 360 aren't the size of 2 iPads and still need fans, I have some serious issues with his crude "estimate".

What alot of them fail to realize is that even though with whatever is in a mobile device, Most of it goes to the system OS to begin with.

Which John Carmack was pointing out. Which ends up being interesting for the PSVita since their taking a console like approach to the way the resources get used.

Really? Alright then, well please do get back to me next year when Carmack's predictions come true and MGS4 can be ported over to an iPhone with zero in the way of optimisations.

But, it has single handedly kicked both Sony AND Nintendo's ass!
....and poor HP..wow just wow on that.

I purchased a 3DS on launch.
I long since returned the device to Gamestop with no regrets.
After I bought my Ipad 2, I then realised that the 3DS was indeed hot burning garbage. There is just simply no comparison. Period.

As I am typying this, Nintendo investors are DEMANDING that Nintendo make games for the IOS devices. Yes, you read that right. The failure of the 3DS is making investors want to jump ship unless nintendo makes a move that makes them....MONEY.

Investors dont care about fanboy rants and such, they are only moved by the mighty dollar.

If it dont make dollars, then it dont make sense!
