Android Market Hits 11 Billion Downloads

When talking with a friend working on a Japanese kanji-learning app for mobile systems years ago, we both agreed that Android would be a major success, rivalling Apple.

Sure enough I spent the last few years watching people walking around with iPhones, but it seems that Android has indeed been raking in some interest without me even noticing.

Downloads on the market have hit 11 billion, with the holiday season seeing Android-compatible products selling like crazy. Activations have also hit 250 million, 50 million more than November, which is quite a sum for a short period of time. This comes to an average of 5.6 million new devices a week, which is no easy feat in a market dominated by Apple.

I’m happy to see this success, as I’m not an Apple man myself and these results show a level of support in the Android community that has pushed me into grabbing a device.
