iPad News: April Fools becomes July Prototype

I think this is a great idea. For every retro-head out there, a flashy eye-dazzling arcade interface would be the perfect place to relive all those lost hours of youth pumping coin into games such as Tempest or Defender. Although these games aren’t actually available on ipad, they have near equivalents such as Geometry Wars. The fictional iCade boasted all the necessary features of a real-life cabinet, including independent power supply, professional grade joy stick and switches, plus Apple-approved gaming interface. All this was, of course, nonsense. Not anymore. Japanese techy and erstwhile inventor Hideyoshi Moriya has managed to throw together a working model of a potential real-life arcade cradle for the iPad. Made from cardboard, some crafty wiring and several rolls of sticky tape, this prototype looks like a 1980’s cell phone – all blocky and graceless. However, it appears to work! It would seem that Moriya could have a major iPad accessory on his hands. If his prototype manages to make it into production, I see no reason why it won’t be a major player in the iPad accessories market. One person’s joke can really become another person’s inspiration. If this product really does hit the market, it’s anyone’s guess how much it would cost. The April Fool Hoax iCade was listed at $149.99. At that price, would a real-life version also be having a laugh or would it all be game on?
