iPad Hacks: Why Hack the iPad?

Ó

There are already heavy slow-moving iPad imitators hitting the streets of Beijing in China. Like the painful reproduction iPhones produced in China, these phantoms of the real thing pose no real threat to iPad sales anywhere outside of that vast nation. They are nevertheless the first viable tablets to carry a Microsoft operating system, and as such signal the painful birth of Apple iPad’s arch rivals. The real threats are the thoroughbred Microsoft tablets ready to hit the western markets during the fall, not least the MS Courier. Other hardware firms are queuing up to join the fray, including Hewlett Packard and Asustek to name but two. Consumers of Apple products signal their discontent with the Jobian closed shop mentality in by-passing the walls of censorship constructed around the ‘approved’ app store. People don’t take kindly to being told what they can and cannot consume on their computing products. As long as software remains safely within lawful federal boundaries, why should King Steve Jobs impose his own stringent and rather fundamentalist morality on all his customers? THAT is why iPad customers were so keen to access the first Jailbreak, and THAT is why Apple may find themselves up against some serious competition upon the release of open platform OS devices offered by Microsoft products. There is no doubt that the iPad is a fantastic piece of computing innovation. Who knows what’s in store with the release of the second generation iPad pencilled in for early spring 2011? It would be a real shame if this fantastic piece of kit hits stormy waters, simply because the captain of the Apple vessel refused to redirect the course of his mighty ship towards steadier waters.
