I keep hearing about people “jailbreaking” their iPad. What does this mean and why are they doing it?
In essence, by jailbreaking your iPad, you are gaining access to the device's complete file system. Once it is jailbroken, you will have the ability to modify apps that already exist as well as install other third party apps to your iPad. Now that I know what jailbreaking means, what if I decide to take the plunge, jailbreak my iPad, but change my mind after the fact? Can I reverse the process somehow? Everybody has second thoughts, and wanting to reverse your iPad after a jailbreak is understandable. When you jailbreak the iPad the process will modify some of the files. Luckily, you can go back to your original state by using iTunes and restoring the device. You can pretty much erase the “evidence” of your jailbreaking deeds by restoring the iPad to its factory settings via iTunes. Why does it matter you ask? It matters because jailbreaking the iPad will void its warranty with Apple, and having a voided warranty on such a pricey object is not necessarily an ideal situation to be in. Make sure you perform a backup of your iPad's SHSH blobs before you go through with the jailbreak process. What on Earth is a SHSH blob? Is that some type of creature/monster living in my iPad? Not quite. It does sound odd, but a SHSH blob is used in the restoring process. It is a specific signature that Apple will check against their servers when you try to restore firmware on your iPad. If Apple releases a new firmware update, restoring to an older version using iTunes will not be possible, hence the need for a backup. I see that jailbreaking my iPad allows me access to third party apps. Will it prevent me from still getting ones from the iTunes app store like I used to? No. You will still be able to access the iTunes App Store after you jailbreak your iPad. There are more clarifications to come in part 2, make sure to visit us again....
