Instead of taking a stance of alarmed humility, AT&T has come out fighting, insisting that they are somehow the wounded party. Goatse’ position is clear: they claim that they simply wanted to expose weaknesses in AT&T’s security systems in an attempt to protect iPad customers. According to Dorothy Attwood, the chief privacy officer for A&T, the telecommunications provider “does not tolerate unauthorized access to its customers' information or company websites”. Wearing the face of an affronted victim, Attwood continued, “We will cooperate with law enforcement in any investigation of unauthorized system access and to prosecute violators to the fullest extent of the law”. Good luck with that one, Dorothy. Goatse is based in France, you’re in the US, and a trip to Paris will confirm quite clearly that you’re not in Kansas anymore. You may have gathered that I don’t like organisations behaving like spoilt children when they’re discovered being lax or naughty. Instead of apologising and making guarantees to fix the problem, it seems that AT&T is more concerned about spitting out its pacifier, having a tantrum and taking its bat and ball home. Come on AT&T, grow up. AT&T is in a very vulnerable position at the moment. There is some speculation that their current monopoly over 3G connectivity services for the iPad will soon come to an end as Apple opens the market. Complaints have already circulated amongst iPad users that AT&T’s network is not robust enough to handle all the increased traffic created by the iPad, citing dropped calls and poor connectivity. This further incident, along with the prospect of imminent competition, certainly seems to be making AT&T nervous. However, behaving like a spoilt child when it’s mistakes have been identified is no way to maintain the loyalty of your customers.
