iPad Gaming Review: WarpGate HD

If you played Elite, Frontier, Wing Commander or any other Space Game you'll immediately feel right at home. The game starts with a decent Tutorial to tell you what it‘s all about and after about 15 Minutes or so you'll know what you have to do. For an iPad Game this is pretty much a learning curve but this does not have to be a bad thing.  Some of the games for iPad or iPhone do not offer more than 15 Minutes gameplay in total so this should tell you something about the depth of this game.

Talking about depth: This is pretty much one of the best games on the iPad. You're a pilot in space and there is plenty of stuff to do. It's not just shooting and flying, in fact it is much more than that. You can trade, mine, land on planets and accept or decline missions. You can play sort of a headhunter or just trade, it‘s all up to you. And another great thing is that all your actions have consequences. OK, this is not Mass Effect or The Witcher, of course. But there is a great way the game handles this whole consequences thing. For example if you accept missions from pirates, the police will be after you. If you betray the pirates and accept missions, but don't feel like completing them - They will be after you and the police will help you. This is very cool since each of the six fractions hate each other. So you have to try help the ones that are weak and later you can betray all of them. It's really a great system and it keeps you busy most of the time.

The controls are very good and easy to learn though combat can be pretty competitive and a little boring. There is not much you can do except pressing buttons. Trading is pretty fun since you are also able to buy better weapons and ships and stuff. The graphics are okay. This is not really the best looking game I‘ve seen and there is one thing that really annoys me: The frame rate. It is not really constant and it feels as if the iPad is pretty much overstrained - But considering that the graphics are not that great, I don‘t think that that‘s the problem. And there is another thing: There is plus+ Online Gaming in this title. But real time fights and stuff like that would have been awesome.

This game is definitely worth its money. The only thing that would have made this game insanely great would have been Online Real Time Fights and a better frame rate. But updating games on the iPad is pretty simple, so maybe be can at least expect Freeverse to give us the better frame rates soon.
