Godfinger begins with a rock-in-space planet, inhabited by a few random followers. It is your job to transform the planet and grow your numbers of followers, in doing so earning yourself gold. In Godfinger, money literally makes the world go round as this is how you are scored. There are a number of other variables, including ‘manna’, which is your divine energy source. Manna is used to power things like thunderstorms and floods. The other variable is ‘awe’, which is generated by your followers and used by you to get them working harder (or resurrected if you’ve let them die). Your manna increases consistently as you play Godfinger, but if you need some more quickly, have your followers dance around your totem pole! You can change the physical world by terraforming. You must manipulate weather conditions around the world to ensure crops are watered and given sunlight to ripen. As farms grow, more gold is earned. You can move people around the world by lifting them and dropping them where you want them, or by flicking them (much more fun). By far the best aspect of Godfinger is the constant reactions of your people and the planet to your divine actions. If a skeleton arises to destroy your followers, you must destroy it with a thunderbolt, generating an outpouring of awe. Sunbeams make colorful flowers sprout out of the earth. It’s worth doing as many divine miracles as you can, just to see the look on your followers’ faces. They are a real funny little bunch! This is not a quick game to complete, which to my mind makes it even better. You have to wait for buildings to be completed and harvests to be gathered. You also have rival inhabited planets in your solar system, perhaps occupied by your friends. What else can I say? This is game is fantastic.
