iPad Games: Real Tennis HD for iPad Serves Wide

You may be fooled into thinking that all tennis games are the same on iPad. Real Tennis Hd for iPad by Gameloft proves how different developers can use the finite resources of the mobile iPad device to their advantage… or disadvantage. In many ways Real Tennis HD is an enjoyable gaming experience although it’s not nearly as sophisticated as Ace Tennis 2010. There are various arenas to play in, but they don’t equate to real-life venues. In a similar way, although you have a choice which character to play on court, these are also fictitious. If you want to be Nadal storming his way to victory at the French Open, you’ll need to look elsewhere. A nice feature of this game is the doubles option, with intelligent play from the iPad-controlled characters adding interest to the game. The usual range of court surfaces are available, the most difficult being grass. I found the controls on this game over simplistic. A virtual joypad on the left controls movement and an action button on the right plays the ball. Controlling play using the iPad’s tilt function with speed and attack buttons onscreen would have been more fun. Nevertheless, the game provides a decent response and play is still a challenge. What is disappointing about Real Tennis HD for iPad is the jerky animation; it’s sometimes literally like “going to the flicks”. That’s a great shame because the graphics themselves are well rendered with good detail and lovely moves. Perhaps if Gameloft reduced the resolution or detail slightly the game would run more fluidly. In its own right, Real Tennis HD for iPad is a good game and fun to play. If the animation was smoother it would be a real winner. As it is, Ace Tennis achieves a higher level of gaming experience with lovely animations that even includes movements by the crowd.
