iPad Games: PAC MAN Lite Resurrects Gaming Hero

The old fruity dotty madness is back as Pac Man munches his way around various mazes avoiding those silly ghosty things. I’m sure many older iPad users remember the hours of addictive play on those big old gaming machines, hammering away at the joystick to beat the maze and onto the next level. Although the iPad version doesn’t offer you a physical joystick, there are three ways of controlling your Pac Man, including the use of a virtual version of a joystick. However, this isn’t the best may as I find my finger slipping off the joystick and Pac Man grinding to a halt just in time to be gobbled up by a ghost. The swiping method is much better. You can swipe any direction on any part of the screen and your Pac Man will respond. There are point-building fruits and ghost-disabling power pellets to temporarily disarm the little pests. The graphics are exactly what you’d expect from a reborn retro game, and the tweeting bleeping sounds are spot on. This is a smooth play, with great speed and a decent amount of challenge even on this taster version. Score over 10,000 points and the game awards you with an extra life, although of course you can’t carry it forward beyond completing the single screen. You can’t blame Nameco for plugging the full version at the end of Pac Man Lite, but it does get old very quickly. I’ll decide if I want to buy the full version thank you very much without a constant barrage of prompts and adverts. Apart from that this is a lovely game. It’s no wonder that it holds this week’s top slot for free apps on the iPad throughout the USA.
