iPad Games: Monkey Island 2 Special Edition Lite is Swashbuckling Splendiffery

All adventure gamers will already know Monkey Island (unless you’ve been living on the moon). If you are a lunar astronaut, Monkey Island is a swashbuckling adventure/puzzle game where you play the would-be pirate Guybrush Threepwood. In the last episode he overcame the ghost pirate LeChuck and won the hand of the beautiful governor Elaine Marley. This time Threepwood’s romance with Elaine has gone off the boil so he decides to seek out the lost treasure of Big Whoop. There are many things that set this adventure game apart. First of all the story is hilarious, with a well written script and fantastic characters. In this version, you get the full 16-bit experience of actors performing character voices in sync with the striking re-rendered animation. The performances are excellent and add to the delicious humor. The artwork has been given a total makeover with refreshed backgrounds and hand-styled high definition graphics. It just looks amazing. If you are a long-time fan of Monkey Island, you can choose to flip into ‘classic mode’ and play the game in its original version. Even if you only do this once, it’s worth having a look at the difference between the old fashioned large-pixel version and this new HD release. The soundtrack has also been re-recorded using a new score and live instruments. Monkey Island 2 Special Edition gives you two ways to play. You can choose to use a form of the old point-and-tap, mimicking a mouse, or you can use the new iPad interactive controls to give your character more intuitive control. There are various hint systems including highlighting objects to help you solve puzzles more quickly. As the Lite version, a taster of the fully fledged swashbuckling smash-hit to follow, you get a proper taste of what lies in store. This game really whets your appetite.
