iPad Games: Modern Conflict HD

As far as the plot or theme of the game, it is quite simple: you basically command a side which has tanks and helicopters as its main weapons of choice. Using those attack methods, you aim to destroy your opponents bases and resources. You have to plan where and when you want to attack, how to manage your resources, etc. While it is a strategy title, there is not too much complication that comes into play. The controls are pretty easy to use, and involve tapping on units to select them, and then tapping again if you wish to strike. One complaint about the controls that some might have are that the bases are small on-screen, so you might make some errors if you miss on your taps.
When it comes to the setting and background for Modern Conflict HD, you won't find a real backstory that it is based on. If you are a fan of war titles that used World War II, Vietnam, or other actual conflicts as a backdrop this characteristic may be a turnoff. There is no Iraq War or conflict in Afghanistan to reference, which seems to be a common theme among many war or military titles that have hit the market recently. Instead, it's a three-nation war that involves the United States, Russia, and China. Of course, with those three involved, one could make the argument that there is an element of realism infused into the game. Supposedly, Modern Conflict HD is a re-hashed game that was originally released under the moniker of Judgment Day War. That title also employed a tank/helicopter battle theme, but used something similar to Israel's historic Six-Day War as its setting. While that added an interesting and unique setting for such a title, it was apparently deemed to be too controversial, which led to the game being removed from the App Store.
Though the main goal is to defeat the enemy via helicopter and tank strikes, the developers added some twists to the gameplay to make things more interesting. You can gain bonus abilities that will give you some battlefield advantages such as the power to intercept the enemy's communications, the power of well-need reinforcements, additional air strikes, etc. Obviously, these elements can give some much needed aid if you find yourself in trouble or facing defeat. They also serve well to help give the game some variation. You will be rewarded throughout the game by pulling off achievements like successful troop retreats, and more.
As it stands, you have 33 missions to experience, with each more difficult than the others. Different settings cause you to employ different strategies, and you will constantly tweak them until you find the right mix. Added competition comes in the way of leaderboards so you can compare your skills to others, and there are direct challenges available versus other players.
Modern Conflict HD is likely not everyone's cup of tea, but if you do enjoy strategy titles with a war theme, you might wan to consider it. You can download it now for $2.99 from iTunes.
