iPad Games: Lux DLX 2 For All Armchair Megalomaniacs

The basis of Lux DLX 2 is a straightforward conquering of the world. This is achieved by moving your armies to various countries already governed by you, and fighting your way across the borders into neighboring territories and hopefully winning the battle. Extra armies are added to your forces as continents come under your control and game variety is governed by (invisible) dice-throwing and card-choosing. You win when the whole world or territory is under your command. There are some interesting and novel features included in this game, the best being the ability to download any of the 80 individual maps created by other users. You can play as a Roman Caesar advancing through the then known world, replay the Pacific World War II, or conquer countries such as Canada, the USA or UK using the mini-maps. Minute onscreen animations of your battles give the tiniest bit of visual entertainment, and the iPad touch-screen lends itself very well to the selecting of countries and gaming options. You can choose various AI modes from easy to Reaper, plus a Random AI to keep you guessing. It is also possible to play upto 6 other players on your iPad. For some reason, in spite of the ability to share maps with other users and to play others on a single iPad, there’s no internet capability to play others over the net, even in a simple WiFi environment. The graphics are on the sleeping-inducing side of boring, with no real attempt at jazzing up the animations. Even the play cards contain icons that need some working out.
