iPad Games: Hero of Sparta 2 HD Is Blood Thirsty Brilliance

You know you’re in for a treat during the glorious opening sequences. There’s a great animation that really sets the scene: a sweeping shot of Sparta in flames, the Colossus of Rhodes, a fight with the Minotaur and a battle with the Kraken. The story proper opens with Argos sailing back from the gates of Hades, and before long he’s on another quest to atone for his arrogance before the Spartan gods.

Hero of Sparta 2 HD is an adrenaline pumping weapons swishing blood churning action game which just improves level after level. New weapons are included as you progress, your enemies increase in power and the gameplay just becomes a frenzy of violence. You can even stomp on your enemy’s head, killing it by splatting its brains out (a mode of attack Tom particularly enjoys – what is it with 12 year old boys?) Apart from insatiable fights, Argos must negotiate puzzles, climb cliffs, tackle tricky obstacles and barge his way towards the end of each level. Each level begins with a visit from one of the gods with exact instructions on what’s expected of you. These pieces of dialogue come as a welcomed relief after a particularly prolonged battle.

In the first outing of Hero of Sparta, the game suffered from juddering game-play and laggy animation. Developers Gameloft have rectified these difficulties with Hero of Sparta 2 HD running as smooth as a seductive dream. This game is superb, from opening credits to your inevitable untimely death. And with an auto-save feature, you don’t even need to leave the action to bookmark where you are. Fantastic.
