Harbor Master HD is made by Imangi Studios. The game was previously released on the iPhone and was a hit amongst fans. Now it has been revamped into HD resolution for the larger iPad. The premise is pretty simple: you are a harbor master. Your job is to direct ships of different sizes around your harbor, guide them into docks, allow them to unload their precious cargo, and then direct them out of the harbor safely. This all sounds simple enough, but as the pace picks up, it can get quite hectic.
While you guide the ships around the harbor on your screen, you obviously have to keep them from crashing into one another. Think of yourself as an air traffic controller, except you are controlling boats, not airplanes. The switch from the iPhone to the iPad with Harbor Master not only means higher resolution graphics, but it also means that there is more available real estate. This converts to the fact that more boats can fit onto the screen, thus making the difficulty level higher. Your brain must focus on all of the traffic before you, and it will definitely be put to the test.

You have six docks in your harbor. There are also two different types of cargo which are carried by different sized boats. Certain cargo can go into certain docks, so you cannot randomly send boats to the nearest dock. The docks are color coded to help guide you as to what needs to go where. The best strategy seems to be to finish off the smaller, faster boats first, as they move much more quickly than the mammoth vessels that trudge along at a snails pace. This works well to keep the traffic at a minimum. If the pace is too much for you to handle, you can have a friend join in to guide to the boats with you. Best of all, the learning curve is simple enough for the most technologically impaired person to pick up. All you are doing is moving boats in and out of docks, and around one another on different routes so as not to crash. Harbor Master HD comes for free with one map: Treasure Island. There are other maps available as well if you want to purchase them: Pirate Passage and Kraken Atoll. Personally, the game is quite addicting. If you are unsure as how you will like it, just try the Treasure Island map. You have nothing to lose, except maybe some free time as you slowly get addicted to being the “harbor master” on your iPad.
