iPad Games: Alpine Crawler World HD Drives Wild

Choose a character from the 5 available (male or female) choose your vehicle to suit the current racing terrain and you’re set to drive. There are 30 courses spread over 3 terrains with multiple weather and lighting conditions. You can race whilst listening to your soundtrack via iMusical. The app contains 3 language choices: English, German or Hungarian (a curious choice!). The animation is slick although the graphics could do with more detail in places. As an off-road game, Alpine Crawler World HD contains powerful physics programming, making the game responses accurate to your driving skill. Although there are 3 difficulty settings, even the easiest setting is hard enough to give you a real challenge. One of the great things about Alpine Crawler World HD is the skill level it requires to complete the courses. This is not a ‘floor your gas pedal’ game; you’ll need careful control of gas and breaking as well as the occasional use of the available reverse gear if you get into trouble. Zoom up a hill too fast and you’re likely to flip your vehicle over, finding yourself turned turtle with no way to right yourself. If you do this, that round is over, with the game laughing at you with the words, “You Suck”! Too much speed before a deep ravine will see you launched into the air like a lemming, only to crash and burn… There are obstacles to avoid such as logs, and time points to pass to gain valuable extra minutes to complete the course. Alpine Crawler World HD is compulsive play, probably because it can be so difficult. As you repeatedly crash or flip your vehicle, you want to “just give it one more go” until you’ve lost yet another hour gaming on your iPad. I guess that’s what it’s all about!
