IPad Game Review: Let's Golf Nothing New

The iPad takes full advantage of its larger screen and processing speed. The graphics have a Japanese cartoon-style that I really like. These really come to life in High Definition and smooth animation. The look is colorful and pleasing to the eye. You are offered a tutorial for better game play, or if you’re like me, you can skip this and launch straight into the action. Simply select your game (eg Instant Play) tap your chosen character and off you go. You can pan around your starting position using the iPad’s touch and drag facility. Game play is straight-forward: a double tap selects driving power with a third tap for accuracy. An on-screen map of the current hole is visible at the top right of the screen. A tap on this provides your overhead view and helps you position your drive. Moving the drive point is tricky. Touch and move is far too sensitive. You often have to position and reposition your drive point to exactly the place you want it. One false move and the pointer starts dancing around the screen. Some better controls for this iPad version would have been nice. You can choose your clubs from a list illuminated on the left of the screen. This seems to be a mote point though as the hypersensitivity of the touch screen makes such subtleties irrelevant. The iPad’s Wi-Fi capabilities provide a multiplayer option. You can choose to play with other iPad or iPhone users. However, with the unpredictability of the iPad’s Wi-Fi, and sudden losses of connection, this may be a really irritating way to play. “Let’s Golf” on the iPad costs more than twice as much as the iPhone version. But with no new courses, no new players, unreliable multiplayer mode and tricky game play, is it worth the extra cost? I don’t really think it is.
