By creating a custom Bonjour Airplay service, AirPlayer basically mimics Apple TV. Bonjour is basically Apple’s network configuration which allows devices and applications to interact over the same LAN.  Hence, by providing service & feedback and interacting with iOS devices in the same way Apple TV would, AirPlayer can send video from your iPad to your Mac. AirPlayer for your iPad has been developed by Erica Sadun, who also released a jailbreak app in Cydia which would allow AirPlay functionality through 3rd party applications. The best part about AirPlayer is that you do not need to jailbreak your iPad. You just need to be running iOS 4.2.1.

However, if you wish to use AirPlay functionality over a 3rd party application you will have to jailbreak your iPad and use application from the Cydia market such as Air Home Video or AirVideoEnabler. Now Windows PC users may just be getting a bit disappointed. But cheer up; you can also use AirPlay to wirelessly stream media from your iPad on your PC. This is possible with an application called AirMediaPlayer.

The steps involved in getting AirMediaPlayer working on your Windows PC are as follows:
  1. .NET framework 3.5 SP1 must be installed on your Windows PC (either with OS XP, Vista or 7)
  2. iTunes must be installed which will also install Bonjour for Windows.
  3. Your iPad must be running iOS 4.2.1
Similar to AirPlayer for Mac, AirMediaPlayer does not need your iPad to be jailbroken. You can download AirPlayer and AirMediaPlayer by ‘googling’ them. It’s now time to enjoy media from your iPad directly on your Mac or Windows.
