Email Attachments This is standard stuff and very easy. Click on the PDF attachment to download, touch to launch and your iPad lets you view it. Navigation is a pain using this very simple reader. There are no clickable options on pictures, icons or headings. This means that a long file will have you scrolling and scrolling to get to where you want. If you need to close the file to finish viewing it later, iPad does not remember where you closed it so you may have to do the mammoth scroll all over again. The default setting viewing option creates a border around each page. This is either aesthetically pleasing or really annoying depending on your point of view. Pinch and zoom fixes the problem by spreading the file to fill the screen. This time, the viewer does remember your preference and will automatically open this way in future. Safari Browser Any web page displaying a clickable PDF link will automatically open the viewer when touched. You’ll get the same as you get with opening attachments, with the same limitations. PDF Reader Apps There are a couple of apps available already which are ‘read only’ but still give you better functionality than the standard iPad offering. Good.iWare released their GoodReader as the iPad was launched. It is available from the Apple Store for the princely sum of $0.99! Alongside any sized PDF files, GoodReader will handle MS Office, iWorks, text files, video, audio and photos. GoodReader creates its own storage folder called the ‘Drop Box’, and all files remain in there until manually deleted. A simple screen layout allows for easy navigation with page scrolling buttons at the top and bottom, along with a scrolling slide bar at the side. A key difference is that you can jump to various sections of the document using any internal links, preventing the endless scrolling through longer files. Pinch and press to zoom into the text, and unlike the standard iPad offering, GoodReader will remember where you are when you return. There are other readers on the market that handle PDF files very effectively, but at $0.99, why look any further?
