Previously through iOS 4.2, Apple had restricted the side switch for only muting purposes. Through popular demand of millions of iPad users, Apple has finally given users the option to decide between using the side switch for muting or for locking the orientation based on what they want through iOS 4.3. If you are one of the many first time iPad and iOS users and are not aware of how to set this functionality then read on as iPad.net brings you the tutorial on how to change this useful function. This guide is for both the original iPad and iPad 2 users running iOS 4.3.

The steps are as follows: 1) To start off, go into Settings from your iPad’s Home screen. 2) Tap on General. 3) Go into the option which reads ‘Use Side Switch to’ and choose one of the two options. 4) The first option is Lock Rotation which allows you to lock the orientation of the iPad either in portrait or landscape mode using the side switch. 5) The second option allows you to mute the iPad using the side switch. If you are not satisfied by having only one function and also want the other, then do not worry. Apple has made a provision for that also. The unselected function will appear in the ‘multitask bar controls’ (tap the home button twice and swipe right). So for example if you chose the side switch for Orientation lock then in the multitask bar control on the left you will find an option to mute your iPad. Similarly if you chose your side switch for Muting purposes then in the multitask control bar you will find the option to lock the orientation of your iPad.
