Do I need to be online to peruse the iBookstore? Since the iBookstore is constantly changing and is basically a “live” feature, yes, you will need to be connected to the internet to actively get new titles onto your iPad. My iPad set me back a good amount of cash, but I am an avid book lover. Are there any free books available? Fortunately, there are free books that you can download. This is great if you are just starting out and want a test run of iBooks prior to purchasing any actual titles. Will PDF files work with iBooks? Yes, you can view PDF files using the app. That's great! How do I transfer my PDF files into iBooks? You have two options for transferring PDF files into iBooks. One method is to add the PDF file to your iTunes on either your PC or Mac. Once that is done, simply sync it to the iPad. Another method is via email, where you can open the PDF attachment in the iBooks app and then read it there. Am I restricted by the view I must use to read in iBooks, or is there some flexibility? Another great thing about the iPad is its versatility. You can read books however you wish. You can rotate the iPad to landscape mode if you want to have two pages open at once. Put it into portrait mode if you just want to see one page on-screen. If you want to go even further to customize the reading experience, you can even change the font and the size of the text to fit your style. When I read books I sometimes run into new words I don't know and have a habit of keeping a dictionary nearby. Is there something built-in with iBooks that handles this? You can throw that dictionary away, because iBooks allows you to find out what words mean by simply touching and holding them on the display. The app has a dictionary built-in to aid in this process, and it can also use Wikipedia and Google for further reference. You also have the ability to see where your important word appears in other parts of the book. Stay tuned for part 2 of this iBooks FAQ as we continue to break down the iPad's reading app.
